What IS it with San Jose pro sports teams this past year?

I'm lovin' it! I was born and raised in San Jose. My first NHL game was a Sharks game, and my first pro soccer game...well ok, it was an Earthquakes game, but back in the NASL. Still...

Nice to see the city having a good year, even if I don't live there anymore.

Sometimes, its just a year for that city.

I know what you mean. :)

How many times has a city (or in the case of 1989, a metro area) won mutliple championships in a year? Off the top of my head, I can only think of a few:

  • 1969: New York Jets (NFL) & New York Mets (MLB)
  • 1979: Pittsburgh Steelers (NFL) & Pittsburgh Pirates (MLB)
  • 1986: New York Giants (NFL) & New York Mets (MLB)
  • 1989: San Francisco 49ers (NFL) & Oakland Athletics (MLB), with the San Francisco Giants (MLB) winning the NL (ironically, the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquakes hit when the Bay Area's two MLB teams were playing in the World Series  )
  • 2002: Los Angeles Lakers (NBA) & Los Angeles Galaxy (MLS)
  • 2003-2004: San Jose Earthquakes (MLS) & San Jose Sharks? (NHL)

That last entry is obviously tentative at this point.

Are there any that I had missed?

Those were my first games I ever attended live as well (Sharks for NHL, NASL Earthquakes for pro soccer). :)

Sorry to hear that you're not living there anymore. :(

I'd imagine a huge city-wide (and perhaps Bay Area-wide) bash if the Sharks win the whole thing.
