If you are nervous, shoot for a melee-oriented fighter. Although feat selection can be daunting, it is nothing compared to trying to select spells for a caster, or keeping a squishier character such as a rogue in good health. That is only an opinion mind. A Ranger may work, letting you wet your feet on some skills.

1st Level Cleric

This gives you a little direction in terms of the outlook of the character.
Additionally, you will get a chace to get involved in all the things D&D offers.
Good biff and good spells means you can try several things out and enjoy the character - what the game is all about.
Spells can be a little complicated to get into - particularly when as a Cleric you have access to quite a few. However, read each of them up and work out what would be good to have up the sleeve. Leave the particulars for the DM to sort out.

That is a really subjective question.

Best advice: Use whatever character type the player has the most interest in trying. That way he will be the most interested in how the character operates.

If he really likes wizards, and is told to take a fighter 'cause it is easier, he may lose interest. If he really wants to be the one swinging the sword, and he is stuck being the medic, he may lose interest. ect.

The group that taught me how to play always insisted on starting players out with a rogue. It works pretty well, in my opinion..

The newbie in our group started with a Shifter. Not exactly what I'd reccommend normally, but it shows that anything can work if that's what the player wants to be, and if they don't mind learning the rules.

Yeah, you can't go wrong with a sword-and-shield type fighter. Be a dwarf, don't worry about your Dex score, throw on the heaviest armour you can get and carry a big shield, wield a dwarven waraxe, and crush skulls. You can get fancy magic armour and weapons eventually, and you don't have to worry about niggly complicated disposable items like scrolls.

Be a fighter or a rogue. I recommend reading the entire combat section of the player's hand book and reading over the descriptions of the skills you take and of the class you take.

My personal opinion is that you start off as one of the stereotypical characters that are portrayed by the Iconics.

This gives you possible level advancement information (you can find advancing stats on the WOTC website I think) so you can see how a character changes level to level and learn those mechanics.

Apart from that, although most people state that fighters and rogues are easiest, I would personally go for a bard. Why? Because you will learn most aspects of the game playing one.

1. they cast arcane spells but they don't have access to all of them so its easier to learn this aspect without going overboard.

2. they have support abilities (their songs) that you can learn to employ to help the party, and this ability is limited per day so you will learn the basics of choosing when and when not to use the ability.

3. they get a good list of skills - you learn the skill system and can actually get involved in non-combat situations with those skills.

4. they don't fight too badly ... so you can learn those mechanics as well.

They have a bit of everything, so you can learn a bit of everything. Then I would focus on a class that deals with only one of those things to really learn those aspects.

D

i would go for fighters but i wouldnt ever go fer a magic user because back then when i first started (and a couple of my other friends) we had a wizard on the team trying to cast spells with out preparing them first.( actually not trying more like did)
