I'm looking to add a little "horror" to my campaign . . . last session I came close, I think.
Everyone here familiar with the Hairy Spider in Monsters of Faerun? You are, even if you don't know it . . . it's just a 1hp tarantula, at BEST a foot wide (with legs), with a lousy 1hp of damage per bite and a DC11 poison that does a point of Dex damage.
The party was going Mega-Spider Hunting in a Hellmouth (yes, it's a Buffy homage.)
I decided things would be more interesting if they encountered, oh, I don't know, 10,000 Hairy Spiders. Like in one of those B-pictures
. Normally they'd be able to easily outrun them, but the terrain, it *was* rocky, treacherous, and slowed them down mightily.
They narrowly got away, but they had to use most of their resources to do it -- it was a *great* encounter. I highly recommend it to all the Rat Bastard DMs out there looking to put some fear into the PCs' hearts.
