What is the longest you've ever played a single PC?

Starting in 1e and evolving into 2e, we had some characters that we played fairly solidly for prolly about 4 years, and who we played once in a while for 4-5 years after. I was the dm for much of it, however, so I'd say my longest pc in that period was prolly about, oh, 6 years or thereabouts.
Technically, two people still have characters going in my campaign that date back to about 1986. Neither of the players are in close touch with me these days, but if they were to drop by and wanna play, I would certainly let them.

I took a Paladin (1ed... my second character ever, rolled about 15 minutes after my first character ever was rolled) from 1978 to 1984 basically full-time when I wasn't DMing. He made it to 32nd level, when he became his deity's personal champion, and was taken out of service. He had become not too much fun to play any longer, because he had maxed out on everything, and it seemed that every adventure ended with some earth shattering fight, and I had fought Asmodeus 4 times, and Orcus a couple times... basically, ho-hum.
The longest I was ever in any one campaign was...well, the same one. And I had 2 characters.

Home game: 3 years, from 1st to 13th level, then a TPK.
Living Greyhawk: 7 years, from 1st to 14th (with 5 deaths; otherwise he'd have hit 18th level and mandatory retirement a couple of years ago).
Shortest lived: first PC I ever played (1979). Died in the first combat encounter.

The oldest PC I'm currently running is Darkethorne, a Drow Druid/Ranger/Magic-User in a long running 1Ed/2Ed fusion campaign dating back to the early 1980's (Epic in 3Ed terms). Each of the players in the campaign has several PCs of various levels (ranging from 1st to Epic in 3Ed terms) that we rotate through for certain adventures. Alongside Darkethorne, other notables (15th+ lvl PCs) I play include Rathsmanjani (female Human Barbarian), Princess Chandralangra (a Paladin), Black Opal (female Drow Ftr/MU/Th), Steel Spider (Ftr/MU/Th brother of Darkethorne), Axa Azura of Tyr (human female Ftr/Cleric), Shadowstalker (human Ass/Ftr) and Tyrus Archon (human Ftr/Thief).
We consider the campaign active, even though we haven't played in it for some time...we're having a duce of a time converting things to 3Ed/3.5Ed. Every once in a while, we discuss various builds over dinner...

Yeah, well, I'm the only one in the group who's willing to DM. By the third session, it had become apparent that I kept records well and could handle the rules decently, and the DM I had started with just didn't feel like doing it any more.Kae'Yoss said:Sir, your perseverance is laudable!

Orbril the Gnome has now been around for about 12 years although that has involved five different incarnations/systems.
He started as a stowaway in the luggage of the new wife of a Lord Ambassador and went on to become a trainer of giant carniverous hamsters, started his own travelling circus, opened a School of Performing Arts, saved the empire with the help of fireworks, rode a dragon, was tortured by bandits, discovered a lost civilisation and was offered the position of Governor by turned in down so he could return to the road as Day Man for his circus.
Even as DM I make a point of having Orbril show up in every campaign (even if it is just a glimpse of afaded caravan of the Grand Circus Maximus disappearing over the horizon...)

About 18 months. During a time in my life where are game session started Friday evening and ended Sunday evening, with food, sleep, and bathroom breaks.
Treebore ended at 27th level fighter 35th level mage. 1E rules.
A couple of years later I met a DM who had a god test that required defeating 3 Solars in combat. I won with one HP to spare (after using at least one heal off of a magic item. The sword, I believe) and Treebore became a Demi-God in service to Boccob.
Good old munchkin gaming.
