D&D General What is the right amount of Classes for Dungeons and Dragons?

It's not enough for a class. There are a thousand concepts just as minor that don't have classes. Why should yours get a class and those don't? The Dashing Swordsman would be good for a subclass, though. It could have 5 abilities that all relate to being dashing and swordsmaning.
nobody's asking for a full class for the dashing swordsman, but if you actually retread the conversation you'll find that the point is complex class concepts that could be supported by a complex fighter class are hamstrung by it's design being designated to carry the albatross of the 'simple enough 4 noobz' champion, so we can have a dashing swordsman that isn't just the barest design crumbs of 'good charisma and persuasion proficiency'

You're missing the entire point I've been supporting the whole thread and focusing on a concept I plucked out of the aether at random to make my point that Fighter classes can't just be dumped into barbarian and paladin to grant complexity.

So here is is bold as brass and also bold in font: They All Deserve Classes.
Okay, but that's not going to happen. You aren't going to get 1000 classes to represent every subclass, class, or potential subclass or class out there, all of which are at LEAST every bit as distinctive as a Dashing Fighter.

You might get a subclass, though. At some point going for what is possible is better than pushing for what is not.

I mean, look right above your post here. Saying "They ALL deserve classes" is asking for the Dashing Swordsman to be a full class.

Were I making a Dashing Swordsman, the closest thing I can see would be to use the Purple Dragon Knight or Samurai for the social increases. However, I don't kludge concepts like that, so I wouldn't be able to make that concept in 5e.

The best thing is to try to get a Dashing Swordsman subclass made for the Fighter. That's at least possible.

Sure, but fighting and fighter are two different things. I've been in plenty of fist fights over the years, but I'm not going to be called a fighter. Professional boxers, MMA fighters, etc. get called fighters.
I mean, just the same, an adventure and adventuring are two different things :p

Regardless, this is why I reckon D&D's been bad in the past making warrior seem the down-scale of fighter when, frankly, in most other things its the opposite

i reckon you should read @Vaalingrade 's post again, 'they all deserve classes' is referring to the complex fighter, one that is capable of supporting a complex dashing swordsman subclass.

That's not going to happen, though. They aren't going to make simple and complex versions of the classes. A Dashing Swordsman subclass is the best to be hoped for. At least until such time as WotC takes some sort of allergy medication and radically changes their position on making new classes.

I’d say the best we could hope for is a complex fighter that can support a simple and easy champion subclass without getting restricted in its design for doing so.
