A genuine medieval sample, just for fun:
The island of Gotland has just under 100 medieval churches, each the centerpoint of a small medieval community, in a total area of 3184 sq km. That gives an approximate average distance between them of 5.6 km, or 3.4 miles, if I've calculated correctly.
