Fascinating. Struck me as NetHackish or Zorkish at first, but looking it up, it turns out to be even older. Where I had seen it was its entry in the Jargon File.

IIRC, those were the leaders of the Great Underground Empire! <nostalgia> I miss the old text games. I remember playing them as a kid on my family's PC jr. My father had the coolest map he and some of his friends made for the Adventure game. They even tried to map out the "Twisty little passages, all alike." Sigh </nostalgia>.
