Modrons are great - here is some info on em (wikipedia).

They have been around a while, but I'm assuming most people associate them (particularly the clockwork styled ones like the one you posted) to 2nd Edition's Planescape setting (I do).

I love me the modrons! I'd probably cuddle my Planescape boxed set lat at night, except it has sharp edges and doesn't take drool well. But modrons are still great.
