What is your 12th level fighter's main weapon?

My group and I usually play lower level games and we would like to see if we are "on par" with the weapon distrabution. Right now we have a pretty big range of wepons:

+2
Frostbrand
+1 keen
+2 speed
+3

Just looking for some thoughts,

Thanks!

A +2 speed weapon is the equivalent of a +6 weapon, costing at least 72,000 gp to enchant! That's nearly twice as much as the frostbrand, and at least 4 times what everyone else has. It's also almost all of a 12th level character's starting gp, according to the DMG table on p.43.

I hope whoever has it is knows how to use it, at least.

Yeah the SPEED wepaon is on the High end. Okay, maybe past the high end, all right it has left the vicinity of the high end. But I guess that is my point. A speed wepon is almost to good for a 12th level character, right? A +1 speed wepon is 30ish k right? Is that extra +1 worth it?

A +1 speed weapon would be equivalent in cost to a +5 weapon (speed is a +4 enchantment), and so would cost 50,000 gp. If you mean, would I pay the extra 22,000 gp to bump it up to a +2 speed weapon, or spend it on something else, I'd probably spend it on something else. Boots of striding and springing, for instance; mobility + speed is a great combo. Throw in the Spring Attack feat for much whizzy goodness.

Anything past +1 isn't very useful. Should concentrate on special abilities instead of straight plusses. Clerics / wizards can then enchant it to +4 at 12th level. (I know, I say that a lot, but it's a good and proven tactic. And it is worth it. A single 4th level spell can cause around 200 pts of damage during one day.)

Although pricey, the speed ability isn't that useful. A pair of Haste boots does the same thing essentially. Actually, at 8000 gp a pop, make it two pairs, so you won't run out during the day ;)

A better alternative for +4 ability would be brilliant energy or perhaps Holy, Flaming & Cold. (+4d6 to evildoers!)

I'd go with the Frostbrand. Actually, I'd go with +2 with 1d6 fire damage. There's enough stuff out there that needs fire to damage it to make the d6 really come in handy and the +2 is nice just in case you meet some nasty that needs a +2 to get around its damage resistance.

Just my two cents.

IIRC, the weapons used by characters as our game just ended at 12th level were:

+1 Holy Mace* (Cleric)

+1 Holy, Flaming Bastard Sword* (paladin)

+2 Keen Rapier* (fighter rogue, main fighter)

+3 Undead Bane Dagger and +1 Keen Pick (ranger, undead hunter)

+1 Spellstoring Dagger (sorceress, she was using the undead bane dagger until our ranger traded for it.)

+1 Frostburst Greataxe (barbarian, this weapon sucked)

+1 Quarterstaff (wizard, the same weapon he started with. He used it less than 5 times)

*: weapons that were enchanted or modified in some way by the party.

Our group used Greater Magic Weapon extensively. My character even used an item to boost caster level to buff weapons up to +5. This tactic made us marvelously effective fully buffed, as our fighters were swinging at least +6 weapons. However, first major battle we had without major buffs didn't go so well. Most people couldn't hurt the Death Slaad except with their bonus damage, and his resistences usually took care of that.

Also, these were the weapons we had through 11th level mostly. It's possible that, upon gaining 12th level and the treasure, we would have used our loot to do more upgrades to weapons. However, IIRC, the wizard's player and I had discussed spell storing ioun stones, better cloaks of resistence, and maybe some see invis stuff.

I wouldn't reccomend going above +4 equivalent, because it takes too much money. Rather than getting one awesome weapon, spend some gold on armor, defenses, and most importantly other stuff.

Get around a +3 weapon, spend lots of gold on other things. You want to be able to Fly and See Invisible without help, and probably haste yourself as well. An Ioun Stone of Spell storing (12k) is one of the best buys a fighter with some friendly casters can have.

the best wreapon i ever got randomly was a +1, keen, vorpal, dragonbane scimitar. it was wielded by the character in my tagline, he killed hundreds with that weapon and had it magically grafted with another scimitar that he got enchanted likewise for the most killer double scimitar imaginable.
