Rings, completely.
Aside from the LotR connection, you can do absolutely anything
with them.

Want a charged magical item? Make a ring.
Want a use-activated or always on item? Make a ring.

You can put every effect you can afford into one little band
of metal, so you can save the rest of your slots for whatever you
pry off of corpses.

If someone _actually_ manages to steal it, just make sure you
have a 'called' enhancement like the armor one from DotF, and
just summon it back.

Magic carpet. Boots of S&S. Cloak or resistance. Handy Haversacks. Or (another favorite, although custom, item) Rope of Trick (basically, it's a short rope that can cast Rope Trick on itself once per day, at caster level 8 -- priceless for sleeping in a sheltered place when you travel in the wilderness).

All that requires CWI. Forge Ring is also very versatile, but it require higher level, and you can wear only two rings. There's no limit to the amount of wondrous item you can use (since most don't take an emplacement).

But what I love is combining items. I'm wanting to create a Poncho of Useful Items and of Many Pockets. I'm also planning boots of S&S giving a constant Feather Fall and allowing one Fly per ten day. Maybe one Haste also. Plus bonus to Move Silently. And usable only by gnomes. :p

But first, the flying carpet. I love flying carpets. I want one.

I prefer arms and armor because as a Wizard, most of my buffs I can cast on myself and my primary job is trying to strike from unexpected places so that I myself am never targeted (thus not needing very many direct defenses).

Magic Armor is very cheap for what you are getting and well equipped flesh walls allow me to do my thing even better. And it's much easier to collect valuables and money from my party if I am able to return an animated large shield or a +3 buckler with no armor check penalty to them. Teamwork.
