what is your favorite Final Fantasy game and why ?

FFVII, FFVIII, and FFIX all manage to tie for the number one slot, with position two tightly guarded by FFTactics. The bottom of the list? FFX, with ease.

My favorites would have to be (in chronological order): III, VII, VIII, and X.

FF3 was just plain fun, and had a pretty solid storyline and neat characters.

FF7 again had great characters all around, including the villians, namely the Turks and Sephiroth.

FF8, to me at least, had a storyline that was simple yet interesting. I really liked that we got to see that Squall's act as tough lone-wolf for what it was, and everyone had their own personality. The graphics were good (though some of the character renditions are cringe-worthy by today's standards), and the CGI scenes were amazing, especially the opening sequence, beach assault, and end sequence. The only real drawback was the lackluster combat/magic system, and while the Junction system was neat in theory, the application made it too easy to power-twink your characters. Though it was nice that you weren't unduly penalized for not completing the assorted sidequests by means of the later boss fights becoming a lot harder because you didn't have the all the "uber" weapons, items, and or secrets. It's probably the overall lack of challenge that makes this one not as popular as other titles in the series.

FFX was graphically beautiful, and the inter-party banter and dialogue from all the characters was a fun touch. The overall story was well-done, and had (for me at least) some very neat twists that I wasn't expecting in the slightest when first playing through. Too bad FFX-2 had to be a horrid "Charlie's Angels" rip.

As for FF6, none of the characters really struck a chord with me, as they all felt too "archetypical," in that I could pretty much predict how they "developed" through the story. That and Kefka had to rank among some of the lamest villians in video games.

A lot of gamers in my area rave about FF9, but while the gameplay was good (much better than FF8), the only character I even remotely liked was the little black mage.

I've got a demo disc for FFXII (came w/ Dragon Quest VIII; fun game btw) that I still need to try out. Here's hoping it's a good one...

There have been discussions of this over and over again in the "Computers, Software and D&D Utilities" forum. Just a heads-up.

Yes, well, that happens when not all of the users have access to the Search function.

FF7 and 9 are my favorites at the moment. They're the ones that have the richest, but tragic stories. I haven't played FF6 (played FF3 though) or Tactics though.

I have to say FFX was my favorite. I actually found the story intriguing, and it had FOUR twists I wasn't expecting.

How many video games can you name that had one?

Part interactive movie sure, but it was still engrossing.

Chuck

It's my working theory that the majority of people who liked 8 didn't like 9 very much, and the majority of people who liked 9 didn't like 8 very much. I don't see too many people against this (though a few). Interesting.

My favorites go:
#1 FF6
#2 Tactics
#3 FF4

Dude, Kefka is one of the best parts of the game! How can you go wrong with an insane megalomaniacal clown-looking guy?

FF IV was (as the US II) the first game I ever fell in love with, you know, the kind of game that just gets stuck in your brain for years. I started playing D&D right after I got FF IV so most of my first characters were just very poor attempts to replicate somebody from FF IV... but anyway, IV is my favorite. Then VII, then VI, then X.

Probably Tactics next, then the original FF (I still have the maps with my cart!). I actually do like FF X-2 for one reason, if nothing else - a true ending that doesn't leave us hanging about the characters, for once.

I own V (haven't played much of it), VIII (never got off the first disc) and IX (got bored around disc 3) but I've never finished them. All the others I mentioned I have beaten.

Matter of taste, I guess. Of course, it might just be my general apathy towards all the characters in general in that game.

Kvantum,
FF8 I thought gave a pretty solid wrap-up for the characters as well.

Never finished FFX-2 due to my utter disgust with the game (and that fact that Yuna went from a quiet-yet-dedicated priestess-type to a fluff-brained bimbette). I've heard that if you complete every sidequest and get a 100% story rating you can
bring Tidus back from oblivion
for a "storybook happy ending."
