Greyhawk. Everything about it just conjures up images of smelly bearded 40 year old RPGA players who play d&d as part of some sort of wacky tournament thing to try to "get more points" than the team across town. Middle age guys who are so dead set in their ways that anything other than Greyhawk becomes "high magic" or "beneath them" even though I've seen RPGA people at cons trading magic items back and forth among characters who aren't even in the same area, not to mention BUYING MAGIC ITEMS STRAIGHT FROM THE BOOK. Then they turn around and bitch about the Forgotten Realms as if there are hordes of ubermages floating around. Get over it guys, Elminster is just one guy, and the Realms is big. Plenty of room for PCs to be "movers and shakers."

There, now that I've insulted half the board, that ought to start a nice big ol' flame war. :)

While I'm on a rant, I can't pronounce half the Greyhawk names, either. Flanaeees? Farlanghanan? Bah.

Okay, I'm going to go take a nap before I get even crankier.

And in case you think I'm being unfair to Greyhawk, I'll have you know I hate Dragonlance too. So there.

Well you insulted people but what don't you like about the setting?

*sigh* you mortals are SO predictable...

Anywho, I voted for Dragonlance -- not that I *hate* it but I just can imagine having fun running or playing a game set there. Everything's been done...

Of course any campaign setting can be what you make it -- my group has been adventuring in the Realms for almost 2 years and only once have the run into a Manshoon clone. :)

I have to go with Planescape. Adventuring in the planes is not my cup of tea (aside from not liking the arrangement of the multiverse). Now, I will not say that any setting sucks, because they all have something (and if ran properly will provide fun), but Planescape would be my least favorite.

How was that for a soft response (the truth, but still soft).

Share your sentiments Eric.

My problem with DL is that it is so finished / done. Maybe if some serious development time was spent to make the setting a more complex place. Or just different. Maybe the dragons decide to eat all the kender? Hmmm...Maybe the kender decide to eat all the dragons?

Either way, it just seems to have a very limited scope to its history and potential future.

I voted for Dark Sun because it is the one I know the least about and that is because it never interested me. I wouldn't say I hate it though. I assume the most popular setting also translates into the most hated. There's so much FR out there you are bound to either love it or be sick of it.

After I saw this treatment of FR:
http://www.daerma.com/
Check out the 'God of the Munchkins' err, Roland:
Followers must carry gold coins
Followers recieve no encumbrance penalty for carrying money
Followers get robes with sleeves that act as bags of holding

I realized that FR as normally described is a pretty nice place. Sure, it may be a little twinkish, and a part of me twists and cringes a little when reading Elminster's description, but at least there are no Sentient Blood-Sucking Boulder clans (yes, that's right, boulders as in otherwise featureless rocks).

Wow. I am surprised to see the level of distaste for the Realms. After all, they sell a lot o' product. Who buys it?

One point (sure to start some friendly debate) is that each setting is only as unique, innovative, overpowered, underpowered, munchkin, power gamerd, or entertaining as the dm who runs it. I have seen exciting planescape, boring Greyhawk, distasteful Realms, exciting Realms, and horrid homebrews. Just some random thoughts.
