For me it's a combination of many of the options. Money is always something to consider, although generally not the deciding factor. RL events on the same weekends have been a problem many times. I can't tell you how many weddings invitations have foiled my plans to go to Gen Con. This year I'm skipping my sister's wedding to attend. It is a significant distance to travel. 21 hours by road, or two flights by air.

This is my first Indy Gen Con, and third overall.

Kind of.. other. It's a long way for me to go but I've driven further on a regular basis to see friends. It's not all that expensive, even with hotel costs included. I guess it's because I never have gotten around to it. I certainly plan to go sometime; maybe next year. I'll see when they start offering con-rate rooms again, because I'd want to stay at the hosting hotel, or whatever is attached to the place that hosts it. I started to go to Origins this year, but got sidetracked.

I'm not going to GenCon this year because I'm trying out DragonCon instead. 1 Con a year is all I can afford.

Bring condoms :uhoh:

Loved Dragon Con when I lived in Atlanta. But it is much... more than a gaming, or even a fandom convention. Not too many cons boast half-naked borderline porn actresses in the dealers room.

My god, why did I ever leave? ;)

Personally its really just lack of cash, the journey doesn't bother me too much (maybe 10 hours flight plus connections), I actually quite enjoy cons, though I only really get to go to Dragonmeet in London these days, though I did go to the last GenCon in London in 2003.

Wow, that's hardcore.

Here in Nebraska there are people who, during college football season, will not schedule their wedding on a Satuday because a) they want to go to/watch the Cornhuskers game or b) they know half of their family won't show up because they're watching the game. There are also families who will argue/fight/sue for tickets of a recently deceased family member. It's pathetic.

But we're the freaks. I see. It's all very clear to me now.
