What Makes DnD Fun For You?

As a player, what part of DnD is most fun for you? Specifically, what parts of the characters and their advancement is most fun for you?

Is it gaining levels? Gaining Feats? Gaining extra Actions a round? I'm just curious on which facet of the character people like best and why. This is what sums up DnD for me, and what I could use best to introduce new people to it.

It's not really in the mechanics, but if you want to restrict it to mechanics, I'd say new spell levels offer the most fun. :)

I love making characters. To a new dungeonling i would say that it is a system that allows one to make any character they want and have them experience whatever they want.

I'd agree with new spell levels. What class other than wizard offers so many class features to choose from, and so frequently?

Mechanic wise it's coming up with combos

Like Feat combos - Example Shield Charge and Improved Trip (yes very feat intensive) so you get to make two attacks on a charge (assuming you are successful with the trip), and if a Spiked Heavy Bashing shield is your primary weapon (2d6 base damage).

Class and Feat Combos - Knight's Bulwark of Defense and Defensive Sweep, if the enemy doesn't withdraw or take a 5ft backward you get an AoO on them every round.

Any combo really.

To me, it's the ability to look at character advancement and the mechanics as potential for cooperative storytelling. As a DM and as a player, I love the "...WOW!" moments. There have been numerous times when a session will get so intense and action will hinge on a roll that just misses and players will be literally twitching and yelling "Burn an Action Point! You can make the jump if you get at least a 3!" - that's what it's about for me.

The fun of advancement is always the collaborative "Where do we go from here?" - it might be the fighter picking up Improved Critical (bastard sword) because it really would have helped when he rolled that 19 to hit the balor. Or the wizard deciding "You know what, I might want to look into some spells that AREN'T Fireball and Mage Armor!"

It's watching my players, newly outfitted with new feats and abilities and stat boosts walking back into the world again - ready to put these new abilities to the test for higher rewards and greater risk.

Have you played with the Book of 9 Swords at all? Would that make melee types more fun for you?

I'm partial to buying (and/or making) gear.

New players may not be able to identify with levelling and such, but who can't identify with going shopping and spending 'phat loot'?
