I wanted to play the archetypal cleric, so I went with Pelor, since he's "True Good" and is also, one could say, the iconic D&D diety because he's the diety of the iconic cleric, Jozan.
I bought the players handbook. Here in Brazil the books are VERY expensive. and now the dollar has gone up again and it has become even more dificult. I used to buy lots of RPG. Spent some $1.000 on Earthdawn books, some serious money on Ravenloft and a lot on storyteller. I just can't afford the books anymore, and my playing time has also decreased dramatically...
If the hobby is to expensive for you, perhaps its time to leave it.
For my cleric, I came up with a very detailed concept and then went to the DM to figure out what god would best fit him. My concept dealt with one domain, and the other I just picked what is considered the most common for this diety.
