What media villains would translate well to D&D?

Define "well" in that context. Cause I'm sure someone has. But I want to see Apocalyse more. Now there's one scary fella. Even more certain in his beliefs than Magneto.

Eh Von Doom is done to death.

Because he works so well.

Personally, when "stealing inspiration" I prefer to go no obvious routes. One of my favorite Runequest adventures was a fan published "Hut of Darkness" that was based on Apocolpyse Now/African Queen.

Take Gregory House and make him into an arch-villian and you have my attention ;)

Scorpius from Farscape. Careful and subtle at times, barbaric and primal at others, a team leader and a loner--Scorpius is a quintessential villain.

He's also half-whatever, so he fits right in.

Heart of Darkness is cool but I prefer the setup as presented more in the original short story than the movie (Apocalyse Now)

Scorpius would make a great villian. Half Illithid/Half-human (the transformation didn't quite take.)

In any case I still favor Apocalyse over Doom. But again, that's me.

How about ol' "Nosferatu" hisself, Scorpius? Quite manipulative and seems to have an ace up his sleeve at all times. Like a cockroach, just when you think he's squashed, he'll pop up someplace else. (Doh! Figures I'd wait too long before hitting submit) To a lesser extent, Commander Bailar Crais is equally obsessive compulsive as a villain, all of which started from a simple accident that led to brotherly revenge.

Hrm. Farscape has a few other villain possibilities like that Nebari chick that had Durka mentally cleansed (same episode as Chiana's first appearance) or the semi recurring villain Maldis. There's also Commandant Cleav, er, Grayza. She'd be the seductive black widow mastermind at the center of a web.

What about Mister Evil? That's DOCTOR Evil. Didn't spend 6 years in evil medical school to be called Mister, thank you very much.

There's also Magus from Chrono Trigger as well as his former lackeys Ozzie, Slash and Flea. Ok, they were rather incompetent.

It had elements of the various adaptions (I haven't read the original to compare). Of the versions I've seen, African Queen was the closest probably.

In a long-term campaign (i.e. one taking place over the course of several years of game time, as opposed to one where the heroes reach 20th level from 1st in a year or less), you could make good use of Syndrome from the Incredibles. Somebody who once worshipped the heroes somehow gets spurned by them (accidentally or otherwise), and as a result turns diametrically the opposite way- hating them and trying to think of a way to get rid of them permanently. Of course, this would work best if the long-term campaign still presents the possibility of people levelling-up faster than over the course of years, so that the Syndrome-analogue villian could become more powerful than the heroes during what to them was down time.

I like this thread, some great ideas (particularly concerning the use of Warforged). My suggestion would be:

Serpentor from GI Joe. A military genius magically created from a fusion of the remains of the worlds best military leaders of history. Charming, cunning, ruthless and brilliant. A perfect warrior general to lead the Yuan-ti to the victory that the scaleless races have denied them time and time again. As well as a delicious plot twist when the players find out that he was made from some of the greatest heroes & villains of all time (as an example in the Forgotten realms some of the donors could be: Yhamun Khahan, Azoun IV, Balduran, One of the Shoon Qysars, perhaps even toss in some flesh from Gilgeam!)

The Joker (especially the Jack Nicholson version)
Lo Pan from Big trouble in little China
Thunder/Rain/Lighting from the same movie
Don Vito Corleone
René Belloq (Raiders of the Lost Arc)
Norman Bates
All evil roles played by Gary Oldman :)
The Devil (Al Pacino) in The Devils Advocate
All those cool horror movie stars from the 70s/80s (Freddy, Candyman, Jason, etc)
