I voted almost 4E lineup: Gold, Silver, Copper, Iron, Other Classic. Bahamut is THE platinum dragon. You can't have a group of dragons of a metal rarer than platinum. So, although I'll use Adamantine dragons, I won't like it.

EDIT to say that I want to also avoid alloys.

I'm okay with alloys, I guess, but my fab five would be Gold (ancient: Orichalcum), Silver (ancient: Mithril), Copper (ancient: Dunno. Maybe Bronze :p), Iron (ancient: Adamantine), and Lead (ancient: Lodestone).

:)
I may be stealing those names.

What about new themes, types or concepts for dragons? Mountain, swamp, desert, underdark, sea dragons?
Light dragons, Dark dragons?
(fey)Wild Dragons, Shadow(fell) Dragons, Astral Dragons?
I know this isn't exactly what you mean, but we kinda have this already.
Swamp Dragon? - Black Dragon
Underdark Dragon? - Deep Dragon
Feywild Dragon? - Green Dragon
Shadowfell Dragon? - Shadow Dragon
Sea Dragon? - Bronze Dragon & turtle dragon

etc, etc...

I'd vote none.

I think ten true dragon types are too much to start with, and hated the idea of "good" dragons. Apparently 4e dragons won't have "set in stone" alignments, which is nice, but I've already chosen the five sets of traits I want.

I voted for the standard existing colors but now that i've reconsidered i agree with those who have never liked the Metallic dragons.

The chromatics all have very strong themes along with temperments that match their environments, but Metallics and their abilities make absolutely no sense to me.

I guess its a Legacy of Dragonlance that they have chugged along version after version.

Now that they've wisely removed alignment restrictions, I have to admit I don't really see much purpose in having the metallic dragons at all.

This is an excellent point.

Maybe the chromatic dragons are essentially elemental dragons. And the metallics are... what? Psionic? Spiritual? Planar?

Maybe they're there just to include more variety. I recall one of the goals of D&D 4E is to put more emphasis on both "D"s.

PS: I really like the idea of Mercury dragons. They're based on a classical element, they evoke unusual abilities (madness, amorphism, speed), they fill a niche not currently served by other dragons. Compare to Adamantine, the dragon that's essentially (and merely) even MORE tough than the iron dragon.
