Evil Gods:' They open portals to other dimensions to bring monsters to punish the puny mortal for daring to ignore them or to have forgotten to placate them."

Whole pantheons:" Yep l, even good gods can ally themselves with their evil brethren when a rival Pantheon tries to invade/steal their faithful."

Evil Wizard:" Just because it is fun".

Good and neutral wizards:" Because experiences can go awry."

DMs. Because without monsters... And monsters we are lest monsters we become...

The Legion of One, from the 3e Creature Catalogue 2 (IIRC) is a great big goblinoid that spawns tons of minion goblins.

EDIT: Sorry, Creature Collection 2. Misremembered the title. Great book, have used a lot from it.

In 5e, the Elemental Princes break off pieces of themselves to create new monsters.

In my games, demon lords are the personifications of curses, so any humanoids/beasts/fey NPC's (with the exception of the ranger's pet and the paladin's mount) around the fight are going to turn into gnolls, monstrous minotaurs, giant oozes, driders, wraths or vampires, etc. whenever it seems cinematic unless the PC's can trick the demon lord into hallowed ground.
