Heck I just roll once and then add each monster group's initiative bonus.
Time is of the essence!
I am new to the game here... I have only played D&D for about 2 months and did my second week of DM'ing last night.
I have a good idea of what baddies and how many they are going to encounter in the various encounters for the evening. I use a quick excel trick to do all my initiatives for me. I list the number of baddies in each cell and then in the cell next to it, I type: =randbetween(1,20)+(ini bonus). I copy that down for the number of monsters. I change the ini bonus, if a monster has a different one. So when my group goes against a horde of 15 Orc Drudges. I copy and paste that 15 times and print it off when I leave to run the session.
I ignore that you are supposed to wait 5 minutes between encounters to get the encounter powers back. I give them back each time they have to roll and imitative check.
