Straight, nude enhancement bonus on a weapon (i.e. a +1 longsword) - transmutation.

Reasoning: the Magic Weapon spell is a transmutation.

Might be logical, but it's evocation. See above.

BTW, the Magic Weapon spell (or the Greater version) isn't used when enchanting a weapon.

A wizard, a cleric, a ranger, a druid, a paladin, or a sorcerer can all craft a +1 sword, whether or not they have the Magic Weapon spell; the spell is not a prerequisite. All they need is a high enough caster level and the Craft Magic Arms and Armor feat. A +1 sword has no spell prerequisites; as such, it radiates Evocation. Not Transmutation.

A quick question. Does this mean that a Wizard specialist that has lost access to Evocation should not be able to create +# weapons? That seems logical but a bit odd.

Personally, I second (third?) Evocation. I see +# weapons as having a thin aura of magical force surrounding them. Transmutation would suggest that the item was, in effect, reforged into a more balanced / keen / etc version of its typical self.

He can craft the weapon fine, because while he cannot cast any spells from the Evocation school, crafting a +1 weapon requires no spells...

Well, good to know I've been working it incorrectly. Also good to know that I'm logical! :)

There I was, new DM, somebody finds the +1 sword, casts detect magic on it and wants to know what's up. Rather than delay while finding the real answer, I went for logic and a quick fix. Too bad logic ain't always right. :\

Thanks for the clarification all.
