GMW is one of the important transmutation spells.

But transmutation is much more than that. In two games I play in there are two evokers, and both banned transmutation. And both have been regretted it since 5th level (haste). The one, being epic now, has regretted it also because of Time Stop, and Teleport spells. And a couple of other things.

Oh, that, and cat's grace, and endurance, and fly, and haste, and dimension door, and polymorph, and teleport [w/o error], and mass haste, and Tenser's transform, and....

Nope. In 3 campaigns we've never had a wizard who even took the spell. There are a lot of far better transmutation spells out there. And what are clerics for anyway :)?

I voted for dispel magic, err I mean abjuration.

Transmutation is a big school, but I think it's more of a party school than a wizard's school. Haste now only gives an extra attack so it's not as good as it used to for wizards. cat's, bull's etc are better on fighters than on the wizard himself. Fly is good though. And the other good spells are at such a high level that you wouldn't missed the school unless you're sure to play the character up to 17th level. (Which is not always our case in my gaming group)

While Transmutation would be the hardest to give up, I'd give up any school given the right concept. So far I've given up Conjuration, Necromancy, and Evocation. I pick an idea of a strength and a weakness and work from there. Any combo works.

But, dang, Transmutation would be missed.

I cannot vote -- my response is not listed.

Why?

My response woudl be:

"It really doesn't matter, no one school is absolutely indispensible to any spellcaster I might play."

Now, I admit there are some schools I might be more reluctant to ban than others (Conjuration comes to mind -- direct damage -and- summoning -and- utility spells, all in one school).

But none strikes me as the school of magick.

IMO any specialist combo choice can easily be made to work except those dropping Transmutation. (Not that tranmutationless wizards are impossible, but you better REALLY know what you are doing or you will absolutely certainly regret it.)

Stat buff spells, Knock, Fly, GMW, Haste, Slow, Dimension Door, Teleport, Poly Other, Poly Self -- these are all meaty spells that are difficult to substitute for. And the selection gets better once you reach 6th level spells.

I have played an Abjurationless wizard before. While annoying at times, I was not too bad really.

You can very easily build a combat-centric wizard without any Evocation spells. It is a simple and fun concept to play, but none of those spells are essential.

I would say transmutation, but hey, new Haste is on the way :D

So Abjuration was my pick, for reasons probably stated earlier (I didn't read all posts)
