Haste now only gives an extra attack so it's not as good as it used to for wizards.

Not yet. And it isn't entirely sure that they will adopt it into 3.5. True, it's in d20 Modern, but magic has another role there, and is much weaker than in D&D. Plus they have a feat that gives you another partial action once (or as much as 4 times) per day (depending on level), something that D&D only has in epic Levels, IIRC....

After looking through the spell lists, the school I'd ban first is evocation. What a pile of crud. Contingency and forcecage are about the only reasons to use it. Next I'd ban necromancy.

Transmutation. Now that's vital.

I would have to say the swiss army knife of magical circles, Transmutation, is the one no one can afford to be without.

You can imagine a wizard without a mage armor; you can imagine a wizard who never conjured a single creature...

BUT can you imagine a single high-level wizard who couldn't teleport?

or fly?

It has so many useful applications, I swear I would feel naked without it. Nix my Necromancy, Cancel my Conjuration, Abolish my Abjuration, and Destroy my Divination, but never Take my Transmutation.

I hate specialization.(even though odly I'd prefer the wizard classes to be built in a more specialized fashion the necromancer class for example) About the only scool I could do without is evocation, ever other school I find to sueful. Evocaitons pretty much just do daamge and heh that's why I drag those meat shields around. Well that and them taking hits for me.

1. Transmutation
2. Abjuration
3. Conjuration/Evocation
4. Illusion/Enchantment
5. Divination
6. Necromancy

And hey, isnt that why some specialties are easier to give up than others? I think the schools should be rebalanced in 3.5, give some more spells to the smaller schools, make a couple combat-related divinations, a few utility necros, etc etc.
