What should a 3rd level wizard buy with 250K+ gold?

Come to think of it, you should also invest in a couple of rods that would automatically "enlarge" a spell or have some other fun effects like that.

Rod of Metamagic (Quicken). The lesser version if you want to buy other stuff; the greater version if you want an item that will remain your favorite up through 20th level.

Iron Golem is a darn good idea, though. :)

A Robe of the Archmagi might not be a bad buy - use the rules in the Magic Item Compendium to give it a +6 bonus to Charisma as well.

I'll also agree with the Metamagic Rods. Quicken is ideal. Maximized or Empowered would be good, too.

Daern's Instant Tower would be darn useful for the discriminating mage. Plus a good runestaff from the Magic Item Compendium would be useful.

Shield Guardian, iron golem, stuff like that- something to be the melee tank for awhile while the party is re-equipping/leveling themselves. Alternativly, a bag of tricks (whichever color is the highest)- for the same reason.

I second the 'skins' suggestion from MIC.

And I gotta say 'Nexus's Portable Headquarters' looks pretty dang cool :)

Thank you! I wanted to buy one for our campaign, but I didn't have enough cash and none of the other sods would agree to chip in - probably because they knew how much I wanted it. :)

Whats to stop the Mercs from doing the same thing? :p

I am suddenly reminded of Brewster's Millions.

"I wanna hire all of you guys as my bodyguards starting right now, and I'll pay you 100 gold pieces an hour!"

They don't want to be horribly hunted down and killed? Or have to drag off all that loot? Duh?

Somehow, I suspect you'll be seeing an awful lot of encounters WAY above your party level, or critical situations that you will be expected to be able to handle. Your DM probably has some plans to throw way over-powered stuff at you, based on the back-story you gave us, and expects that the goodies he's given you up-front will allow you to compensate.

I'd propose that, before you get any new toys you use some of the cash, or your 20-for-a-turn amulets and get Commune cast, to get some divine guidance on how you're EXPECTED to use the cash, and what you may reasonably expect to need in the future.
