What should a 3rd level wizard buy with 250K+ gold?

Whats to stop the Mercs from doing the same thing? :p

Hire paladins :). Heck, hire diviners to find paladins. Since you're trying to save the universe, the pallys will work for free :) (plus expenses, not limitted to care and feeding of them, their mounts, their squires, level-approriate magic items, etc. :) ).

"Twilight!" "Twilight!" There's two of you spelling it insanely now!

And I would make investments and just live off the equity, myself. Adventuring is for suckers.

That would require your source of income survives the apocalypse. Thus, save the world, then live off savings... ;)

Infinite Scrollcase from Magic Item Compendium would be useful to any wizard. Also, I forget the name and source right now, but there is an eyepiece or monocle that allows the user to identify a magic item by studying it for one minute. The scrollcase is like 2800 gp and the monocle about 1500, IIRC. Not bad when you have so much to spend.

Tome of Clear Thought +5 is pricey, but combined with a Headband of Intellect +6 you'll have +11 to your Intelligence score...and I have to think that +5 or +6 to you spell DCs - not to mention bonus spells - would be useful.

Ring of Wishes with one wish:

"I wish that I had restored to me the powers that were drained from me, without affecting the ability of the Crystal to contain the Tarrasque for one year".

Or something similar...greater restoration spells, etc.

You win the thread.

I'd go with tomes, tomes and more tomes. Everything else can be stolen/sundered/rust monstered. But inherent bonuses are forever.

Thank you! I wanted to buy one for our campaign, but I didn't have enough cash and none of the other sods would agree to chip in - probably because they knew how much I wanted it. :)
I have a used one I'll sell you at half price; every PC in our group has a bag of holding or portable hole, so they can't get in the Portable HQ. Bummer. :D

It's a really nice item. Great work.

Short term:
#1 Hit points. Find _something_ (vest of false life?) that grants hit points.
#2 a few well chosen wands or staffs. Your own spells will suck for a while, but wands will rock.
#3 AC/save bonus items.
#4 Scrolls.
Long term:
Stat bonuses (innate or not), rod of quickening (I'd go with up to level 6 myself), maybe an additional minor rod of quickening.

Vest of the Archmagi (200k). +8 AC, +5 to all saves, +2 on CL to overcome spell resistance, recall 3 spells per day of up to 9th level (as Pearl of Power), burn a spell slot to heal yourself 5 times the spell level burnt.

Yeah, worth every penny. Then, use the other 50k to get some stat boosts, a War Wizard Cloak, and a bunch of Chronocharms. Oh, and a healing belt. Also, Arcanist's Gloves and an Amulet of Tears. Bracers of Repulsion and a Dispelling Cord. Ring of Mystic Fire, Ring of Piercing Spells, Healing Belt (did I mention Healing Belt? Every adventurer should have one.), Skull Plaque, and a Lesser Trudeath Crystal (with a +1 weapon attached to it).

Seriously, borrow someone's Magic Item Compendium and go to town.
