What should a ceremony to Pelor be like?

A somewhat dark twist.

The public ceremony is simply the celebrating of the arriving summer

The private ceremony is for the priests to ward the lands from getting _too hot_ during summer. If the priests don't get to complete the rituals then the land would scorch (unable to be used for farming) forest fires may arrives (from the forests being too dry and easily catching fire) and possibly even severe sunburns. Of course, the public can't know this or else think of the fear and panic in thinking that the otherwise-helping god would naturally scorch the earth (and people?) if it weren't for these extra protective ceremonies. But if an evil cult (of pelor or even others) wanted to basically harm everyone, then stopping the private ceremony would be a way to have pelor do it and make it seem like a natural disaster with little effort or blame put on them.

In other more general terms...
the public ceremony should ideally be held between sunrise and late morning, outdoors. the private ceremony at noon, and the church hall (or where ever it is) should have an open ceiling to the sky/direct sunlight.

Edit: I should qualify all this by saying I only skimmed your original post and the rest of this thread since I'm tired so this may not even be an appropriate suggestion :)

No, I really like your ideas for long term and widespread effects of disrupting the ceremony, and since I can basically just put that stuff in as the game goes along. Especially since no one once managed to roll a knowledge religion check above 5 (natural) the entire night, I didn't have to say much about what the festival really affects, so I'm also not particularly bound to anything I said. I hate it when I tell the players info without fully realizing the ramifications declaring such and such will have later on. Fortunately, they were nearly clueless about the whole thing. Good for me!
