What should be the check to have a good rest

You are trying to sleep without camping stuff in a rough place and the weather isn't good (or you are in a really cheap inn with much noise around, etc). Which check should be made to know if you get enough rest for game mechanics purpose (getting rid of fatigued status) ?

For outdoors, the Survival skill would typically be used. Dragon (or Dungeon) magazine had detailed mechanics for figuring out the DC, and helping others in your party. Anyone know what edition this was?

Otherwise, a fort save would be suitable.

We are talking about PROFESSIONAL ADVENTURERS. They can generally rest anywhere, under any conditions, much like modern day soldiers do.

The only exception really should be very harsh condtions, like a outdoors in a raging storm or the like.

Give your PCs a break.

So a wizard just getting out of many years of academic training with only knowledge skills should be ready to rest in any hazardous place ?

I don't like to use player's knowledge to handle things like camp preparation, so I never ask them "how they would make their camp", but I look at their classes/skills/etc. If I have a party of "urban" rogue/wizard/swashbuckler getting in the wild, they will run in troubles.

On the rare occasion I care, I have the character with the best survival make a check. DC depends on weather. If he fails everyone makes a fort save (DC usually in the 5 to 15 range) or they become fatigued.

This only usually comes up in really bad weather or long outdoor stays.

Don't forget that sleeping in medium (that's chain) or heavy armour automatically gives you the fatigued status for the next day.

So what would you describe as "sleeping in a chain" ?

If I wanted to be really harsh about it... I'd make it a Concentration check (with a DC of about 10 to 15) to ignore whatever unpleasant factors might preclude a restful sleep. The fatigued condition does not actually require sleep to remove, just rest (i.e. not doing anything).

Base DC 15 survival check, with a +2 increase in DC for each member beyond the first. Give a +2 bonus to the check for preparedness, such as having tents, clean water, food, etc... Penalties can also accrue for weather, location, etc.

These numbers are from memory and based loosely on the Dragon Magazine information mentioned earlier, so credit where it is due.

I would also stress not using this normally, but rather when it would add to the tension or else the environment is truly unforgiving.

Oh yeah. This is also a great way to determine a camp's "hide" check, should you need to determine if one is spotted, although I think that foul weather and some other things should be a bonus instead of the normal penalty to the roll.

Do you remember which Dragon issue it is ?

You do the same for people sleeping in armor ?
