The players in my campaign are soon going to embark on a voyage to a remote island that is a haven for pirates. Access to & from this island is controlled by one man, who reigns over the island from his nearly impenetrable home/castle.
The only way into the home (the PCs are in the level 6-7 range, so no teleport yet...) is through a secret trap door in the ground outside the home. Once you get into the door, you go along an underground passageway and then into the castle.
The module I'm running has this castle-like home with this massive trap-filled maze underneath it after you go through the passageway. I'm not big into traps, but I'm looking for some sort of guardian for this home that could dwell in a chamber along the pass - maybe some sort of golem? Some sort of monster bound there by the ruler of the island? (the ruler would have some sort of way of avoiding the monster/creature)
The guy that runs the island isn't particularly powerful himself - just very wealthy - and would pay to have a powerful evil mage or cleric create a golem or bind a demon/devil there, or to have some adventurers capture an exotic monster or something. The most common threat would, of course, be pirates.
Any ideas or suggestions for this guardian?
