Knowledge (meta-gaming) ??

In 3.5, check the knowledge skills: each type of monster is listed under one of the knowledges. Trolls are giants, and as such are covered by knowledge (nature). The check is 10+the monster's HD to get one piece of useful information; for every 5 points by which you exceed the DC, you get another useful bit of information.
