What source book is a "rook" in?

Heh, I ran a game years ago where the PCs were put up against living chess pieces, had to move across the board in the style of whatever piece they were randomly assigned, then had to fight the opposing pieces in D&D combat to 'take' them. Harry Potter nicked the idea from me! Went down really well with the players, though. (The rationale was some dungeon built by a guy obsessed with games. I was 17, it didn't need to make too much sense).

As for the rooks in DCC 6 - the main difference is with harpies is that the have "Frightul Caw" as an ability rather than charming.

I can't be the only one to think that a line of chess-based monsters would be hell of sweet, right?

I did something like that once for a trip into Faerie. The pawns were halfling-sized faeries with pole-arms. The bishops were clerics. The knights were fighters.

The black queen was nasty: Fighter/MU/cleric.

I punted on the rooks, though. They only appeared as the twin towers of each castle.
