What style of grid do you use for your battle map?

If you use different styles, select the one most often used (by your primary group) for combat/positioning.

Thanks!

We use a large Chessex megamat with 1.5" squares. A large piece of plexiglass lays on top of this to keep markers from staining the mat. Another advantage to this setup is that if I have a special detailed location drawn up I can slide it under the plexiglass which is great for temporary marking and helps it lay flat.

I chose the 1.5" squares because so many minis that I like have bases that exceed 1" although the actual figure is not large size. The minis are too cool not to use (I'm looking at YOU Mason Thornwarden!!!) and this allows the best of both worlds.

Not many voters in this poll yet. Maybe it's time to add more threads to the front page of the General forum.

Guess I'm the only hexer so far ...

I did hexes for a while, in order to avoid the 1-2-1-2 counting of third edition, but it was a pain to draw corridors and walls.

Nowadays I might still use it for outdoors encounters, but we are playing 4th edition and converting areas of effect to hexes sounds like it would be more hassle than its worth.

For Shadowrun (3rd edition) we used 1" hex mats. Since moving to D&D 3e we've used 1" square mats. I'm currently using Alea Tools combat counters and have been thinking of getting a 1.5" square grid to give me some space between magnets. I haven't made the investment yet though, because...

I'm thinking of moving to a terrain systems instead of a drawn on mat. I've been toying with getting WotC's Dungeon Tiles, or maybe some of the 3rd party tiles that you print yourself. I've also been looking into card-stock model sets that you download and print... If my numbers would just hit in the lottery I could devote a room to dwarven forge and be done with it. :)

I play GURPS and D&D 3.5 and 4e. I use BOTH hexes and grids. 1 inch each.

I love the mini's.

Dungeon tiles, a good battlemat, and an inexpensive to run lazer printer are really required materials for me.... well Dungeon Tiles for D&D anyways.

I use a 1"-square vinyl battlemat I had to order on Amazon since it seemed that no-one in Italy had those :-) The great thing is that it has squares on one side and hexes on the other, and occasionally I've used hexes (for shadowrun). For D&D, squares all the way.
