What the heck are all these iron/ceramic/poultry DM and NPC competitions?

The idea is based on those Iron Chef competitions, right?
Actually, they were ported over from an Iron Ref themed Pyramid magazine idea. (No link because it is a subscription service.) I think the first Iron DM event even said "Hey I saw this on Pyramid and ...." Someone with search can look that up.

Pyramid Magazine: February 2 said:
Three competitors. Three minds of the roleplaying world, each representing a different gaming genre, have accepted the Iron Ref challenge.

Three secret ingredients. Selected by a special guest, three ingredients -- plot elements, story pieces, or other oddities -- are selected for the challengers to incorporate into their concoctions.

2000 words. Each competitor has two thousand words -- and no more -- to devise a generic scenario in their genre incorporating all three secret ingredients.

24 hours. And they have one day to work their magic.

Who shall emerge, victorious, as the Iron Ref?
In the original, the Iron Refs represented different genres of role-playing: Horror, Fantasy and Sci-Fi -- giving the competition a feel true to the source material.

have you tried reading the first page of one?

Now why would I go do that when people will answer my questions and raise my interest, giving me time to sleep?

Honestly, it was because I'd read about it in Pkitty's storyhour recently, and whim just struck me to ask.

I guess you could say I'm the "current" Iron DM: here is the latest Holiday IDM competition.

RW - if you have never done one of these, I strongly suggest you do - there's tons of fun.

Maldur, thanks for the kind words! Here's a better link to that particular story:

Q-tips... that made me laugh even more than Lidda's wand, or the 'First Edition feel'...

Hey, I thought the rules said no including pictures other than those supplied for the round! Half of the jokes don't work without the PHB art.

I call foul! :D
