What third-party d20 settings should I investigate?

If you like Graeco-Roman style then I highly recommend Arcanis. It is my favorite 3rd party setting (not counting Ravenloft, which I consider to be different since it was originally a supported D&D setting; Arcanis is original).

Iron Kingdoms is one of the most clever settings I have seen. Midnight is up there, too, but due to the dark nature it could turn some people off. For traditional fantasy gaming, go with Scarred Lands. But its a dead world in the sense that they have stopped publishing material for it (which may be a good thing considering the endless products that came out for Forgotten Realms helped destroy it).

What destroyed it was 3.5 and the fact a) there wasn't too much quality control along with no adventure support (or very little) plus the fact it was a little TOO fan controlled at times.

But it survives and I keep alive.

Heard nothing but good things for the Scarred Lands and the Midnight Settings.

Grim Gritty - Valus, I like it and the tone of the world.

Be the first Heros - Dawnforge, only need one book. The Complete Collection (3 books in one), downside is there is no new material for it.
The DM I currently have pulls stuff from Scarred Lands all the time on us to mix us up.
