What to buy? Arcana Unearthed or D&D Minis Entry pack

Any more info on the appeal of each purchase to you? We might be able to help you better.

In all honesty, the uniqueness of AU appeals to me as I'm definately looking for something new to 'play around' with---I dont expect it to necessarily have the wonder factor that the red box did, but I do hope it to wring a few 'thats neat' outta me :D . All the games I DM are either PBP or PBEM & at the moment are set in the Forgotten Realms---I enjoy runnin them, but, something new to run down the road might be fun:)

I've been looking to get a mini game for awhile---almost did the chainmail game but, in the end, it was to much of an investment. The D&D mini game appeals to me for its relatively cheap first investment---though i can see the investment going up w/all the expansion packs---besides, I do have well over a thousand minis that I've been collecting since the eighties & had hope to use them in whatever game that I get.

In the end I can talk myself out of buying both, but, dang, after last week's 72 hours of work, I feel I'm entitilled to spend a little on meself :D

My vote would be with AU, I have the book and wow... I have never had a single book inspire so many ideas since the PHB. AU reinvents fantasy roleplaying archtypes in such a way that you already seem to know all of it, but its also all new. I really don't think the miniatures are as intersting, but hey, its your choice, do what you want.

Well, if you generally use miniatures in your game, and allowing for the utter random factor, then the Entry Pack is probably your better choice. Watch out around small children, though! ;)

If you are looking for a different take on the rules and races, with a totally different magic system, then AU would be the better choice.

Personally I am having a lot of fun designing a whole new campaign around AU; since my group doesn't get into battleboarding combat, we are avoiding the new minis.

Personal choice in the end, though, as to which you would enjoy more. :)

Do you like core D&D, and see no reason to change? If yes, then buy the mini's, or even better some Fantasy FLight Games Counter Collection (under $20 for hundreds of counters of all types, exactly sized for a battlemat).

.
Ummm, isn't the Counter Collection by Fiery Dragon, not FFG?

It is a great product by the way. Among non-core D&D products I have bought, this has arguably seen the most use. If your satisfied with counters for battles, they're great value.

Umm, err... uh, YEAH, that's what I said first time, see? *points innocently above*

Pay no attention to that "edited by" stamp - the systems getting really haywire lately... :o

Now if only Fiery James or Claudio don't find me in a dark alley with a pavement crusher... :)

Arcana Unearthed is now in me chubby paws :D
Congrats! It's a great choice, and you'll spend hours just sucking in some great game ideas. Come join us over in d20 Systems Forum for some discussion if you feel the need!

Narleth,

I could have told you that you would have been MUCH happier with AU than the mini stuff.

Why? Cause there are no F*&&ing Narleths there! At least in AU, you can use it! Plus the Campaing setting makes GREAT use of the S&SS stuff. :) Not to mention you can use a few of the core classes in interesting ways in your own D&D/Scarred Lands game. (Say like the magic stuff, pre-Titan! ;) )
