D&D 5E What to do with fighter's extra feasts at converting?

LH Almeida

First Post
There's a fighter in the group, and, as it was part of the class, he has lots of feats that are part of who he is. But in 5e, there's nothing like this.

How can I do the conversion without removing that fighter's identity?

Thanks.

Gonna need a few more specifics here. What feats does he have? What does he feel his 'identity' is?

What abilities do the feats give that Fighter? It might be good to have more information so we can make informed suggestions.
A lot of 3.5E era stuff can be represented either by 5E's feats (which there are fewer of, but grant more abilities) or by Fighter (Battlemaster) class abilities. For example:

  • Power Attack and Cleave translate quite well into Great Weapon Master
  • Many of the Improved [Maneuver] feats fit abilities like the Battlemaster's Trip Attack, Disarming Attack, etc.
  • Mobility is represented by 5E's Mobile feat
  • Precise Shot, Far Shot etc are covered by the Sharpshooter feat

There are also some abilities that are built into 5E. For example, Spring Attack/Shot on the Run are already allowed by the 5E rules, and Quick Draw is unnecessary because you can already draw a weapon "for free."

Ok, I found some of them with names in English. The ones I didn't find, I'll tell what they do, ok?

The ones I found where Power Attack, Multiattack, Improved Natural Attack (the character is a minotaur, one of the playable races in the World we play in), Weapon Focus, Bull Rush and Two-Handed Flurry.

The ones that I couldn't find are:

-One that grants 1 extra HP every level (In Portuguese, it's called Vitalidade, but it's not the same as Vitality)
-One that lets you have an extra attack against an adjacent creature whenever you reduce an enemy to 0 HP. (In Portuguese, it's called Trespassar)
- The improved version of the one above.

I really want to convert, but I'm finding some things sorta hard, like the Drunk Master, that I still don't know how to do.

Firstly, feats are far more powerful in 5e, than 3.5. Everyone gets less of them but they do more. Fighters still get extra ones at 6th and 10th. Power Attack, Cleave and Great Cleave are pretty much covered by the new Great Weapon Master feat. And the new feat for extra Hit Points (Durabke?)is now +2 hps per level. Some parts of his character would now be class features. The Battlemaster fighter gets maneuvers that make him a master bull-rusher. +1 bonus feats (Weapon Focus) don't exist (and shouldn't) in 5e. They would break bounded accuracy and I can't imagine are really part of his identity anyway. Not sure what Two-handed Flurry does but perhaps it is covered by a fighting style.

As for multi-attack with horns, that's something you'll have to look at yourself. Perhaps start with the Shifter race that was included in the recent Eberron rules update and move from there.

The key isn't to copy the exact same feats and powers, the key is to look at what he is and build something similar. I'm imagining a big hulking minotaur fighter that likes to charge into people and send them sprawling, before finishing the prone Emmy with a great big axe?

That's easily done in 5e with a battlemaster fighter and the right maneuvers and feats. They're not the same feats, but they'll make the same style of character.

There are some things that just won't convert easily though. I'm playing a spellthief in a 3.5/Pathfinder game at the moment and I can't even begin thinking of how to convert steal spells.
