We are getting ready to create a 1-shot game for Gamesday Chicago. The slot lasts for 6 hours. There will be 2 groups that start apart and then come together for a battle royal.

Would you rather play the standard PHB classes or the newer base classes like Warlock, Favored Soul, Marshall.

Please explain your choice.

I look at gamedays as a chance to try new stuff, whether it's classes or entire systems.

That said, that wouldn't be the only determing factor. Scenario, level range, familiarity with the DM, all would weigh as heavily or more so than just the chance to play non-PHB classes.

I crave to play a bbn2/scoutX with Powerful Charge or Imp Skirmish... a big twohanded polearm with reach, Reckless Charge, Power Attack, Cleave, Great Cleave...

One charge and the BBEG is dead.

The 5 characters will probably be 7th level. It is at a Gamesday/Con so most of the players & DM won't know each other very well.

For a one-shot, you generally don't want people to spend a lot of time looking up rules. If you use non-standard classes, I'd advise making the character sheets REALLY complete and streamlined.

That was one of my concerns. Even if the character sheet stays under 1 page (2 sieds) it might be a lot of new things for some players.

My other concern is that the players will range from D&D Supergeeks to casual gamers.
A fairly experienced player might at least have a casual knowledge of what a scout does, but some may not have even heard about it.

I like the idea of a standard class but with some "different" feats/builds. something like a fighter specializing in daggers or shortswords... or a half-orc rogue who's more of a thug...

I like the idea of still doing something "out of the ordinary", especially if it's not a power build but within the core rules.
