What type of characters would you like to play in a 1-shot

I have no preference vis a viz one-shots vs. campaigns. I'm fairly bored with the standard class/race combinations at this point for either a one-shot or a campaign either one, but given an enticing enough character concept, I'd certainly entertain one.

I like the idea of standard PHB classes maself, primarily b/c people would be more familiar with them and it would make play "one shot play" a whole lot easier ... at least IMO. :\

I'd rather *play* non-PHB classes. Warlock or Dread Necromancer or Soulknife, for instance. OA Monk. A Witch, Magister or Warmain from AE could be very fun.

If I was running the game, I'd rather run PHB classes, but I'd want to design them to shine and not be 'same old, same old.'

Nonspecific, no background, adventuring in a keep ... sounds like a standard, dull dungeon run.

Probably just stick to the Usual Suspects -- one of the four. Anybody else in such a world would probably be extraneous or ineffective.

Well it is pretty hard to do deep immersive roleplaying in a 6-hr one shot at a con.
The real point of the "dull dungeon run" is to have the 2 competing teams/table meet in the middle.

I've really been enjoying the class variants out of books like phbII, complete mage and dungeonscape. One particular combo I want to try is a warforged juggernaut with the alternate fighter abilities from dungeonscape.

I often run (or get others to run) one shots in order to test out new stuff... So... In general, if I'm playing a one shot, its a way to introduce others (or to familiarize myself) with some new class, feat, system, or whatever...

But in a gameday situation, I think you might want to stick with things that you can either explain very quickly, or that people are already likely to be familiar with.
