What was the Day of Mourning like?

The battle wages all around the unfortunate team. The forge has been damaged instead of creating new setinent beings for war, it is creating mad mutations. The existing Warforged within the instalation seem to become more golem like. The strange energy releases and strange smelling glowing gas spreads out enfeebling them.

Finally, you make it to the final hallway to exit the factory. You are certain it will self-destruct soon. As you reach the surface you feel a quake in the earth. The facility is beginning to break up. You reach the surface but find the door is being held. Teaming up as one force, the warriors force the door open. The hallowing wind slams the door shut again.

Dust, red and black, blows feircely in the wind. It pains your eyes to look ...but you do. You look into the very center of Cyre. It will possibly be the last sane decision you make.

A dark cloud with multi colored crackles of energy not unlike a magical lightning storm rages from the far distance. It grows by the second. It grows higher and wider. Then your attention returns to the ground. A wave of magical energy, dust, debris and anything not held down rolls towards you growing like a large wave in the sea. It crests carrying what looks like entire buildings and huge creatures and equipment of destruction and crashes down. It is miles away but it is too close.

The ground trembles again. The clouds in the sky begin to circle and then grow dark. Dust from the wave remains in the distance ...hovering. It looks like a sentinel trying to keep all from entering.

You blink.

You had to mentally pictuire yourself blinking. The site before you is so engrossing and overwhelming. Then you see something. Something small. It comes out of the thick dust.

A human mage on a rug.

The rug falls apart near you and he tumbles violently towards you.

You run to him for answers. Looking at him- his eyes have melted out of their sockets. Metal rings have softened and burned him. Hius skin looks diseased and as if it were something apart from him.

Fearing to touch him, you lean to make out what he has to say. "I...I...I can't believe it...they really did......" He gasps and coughs violently then his skin melts and his muscle tissue falls off. His bones torn black and brittle. Soon, all of him turns into power and a strong direct breeze seems to collect him and he returns to the land he thought to escape.

You will never be the same again.

Basically what I had in mind :)

Almighty Hellocow has spoken? Does anybody have this thread address? I'm going to go fishing for it tonight.

I like the epic-spell gone wrong, this makes sense and explains the sentient spells and other magic effects (like walking dead.) Since a giant battle was going on at the time, perhaps they intended to use it there.

There is considerable evidence of high fire damage (the glass plateau) and I don't know what caused the glowing chasm. Perhaps they were digging for some dread thing and found it. . . .

To represent the Day of Mourning, I'm thinking a DC 20 save vs death every round unless they get out of the fog. I might make some "out" in the adventure (such as a teleport gate, or flying carpet (good idea))
