If 4e, I've nothing to contribute.
If 3e or earlier, i.e. using rolled stats, the highest stat is only part of the equation. What I tend to look at is the starting stat average, after racials.
One bored week a while back, I ran the numbers on all of our "star" characters for average starting stats, using a 10+-adventure career as a cutoff point; vs. a control group of characters who had not lasted so long...between 0 and 9 adventures. What I found was a significant dropoff in those who died before getting into 3 adventures; with surprisingly little difference above that - for example, the averages for the 12-adventure types were about the same as the 4-adventure guys.
In all categories, most started with at least a 16 somewhere.
