What Will Happen to Greyhawk?

I resent that! Some of us are diehard Greyhawk fans too! I hate the trend towards Epic-levle powergaming, easy-to-make magic items, min/maxing prestige classes and feats, and all the other new trends as much as any of you greybearded old-timers.

And I'm only 25. So there.

:P
Actually, I'm a Realmsfan. But I do pay homage to Greyhawk for making D&D popular.

I pretty much gravitated back to the 84' boxed set, so Greyhawk will remain my default setting.

Man, there's just soooo much cool stuff and potential in this generic setting.

I also use it for C&C.

Well, as heretical as this may sound to some...

I think Greyhawk can survive if it's completely rebooted (like the Bond or Batman film franchises). Start fresh, throw away a lot of the old continuity, but throw in familiar names & pieces as a tip of the hat to past incarnations. Heck, even borrow liberally from other older now-defunct settings like Blackmoor and Mystara for the new incarnation.

Have interesting elements in the new Greyhawk, but don't throw in new wonky core mechanics/twists to core mechanics that pose problems for the game later on (FR's spellfire, I'm looking at you...).

Have a more diverse Circle of Eight, rather than just adding the token elf character and the token woman character to the group. Perhaps go with a more grim-&-gritty feel for Greyhawk, away from the high magic fantasy of FR, or the high-magic pulp or noir approach used for Eberron.

Just an idea.

I'd still rather see Paizo publishing an Age of Worms hardcover, a Maure Castle hardcover, and more GH material, since Lisa and Erik would treat the setting well.

Nod. It doesn't HAVE to die, but it seems like it probably will.

I agree 95% with what you're saying here.

Why only 95 percent?

Simple-I would be overjoyed if the timeline was rewound to 576 CY, and it really was starting all over again. That way, we FtA haters would get what we've been wanting for so long.

Even so, this still means no Sean K. Reynolds writing for the setting.

In the worlds of the great Homer Jay Simpson...

WOO-HOO!

:]

I wish someone would take the 83 boxed set, the Dragon articles by Gygax, Lakofka, Kuntz and put it together in one book with two maps (the original and an 8.5 x 11) with the timeline set back to 576 CY.

From the A$$es was to Greyhawk what Rick Berman was to Star Trek.

Aside from Erik Mona, you got confirmations on the other three?

No, I was just stating who (besides Col Pladoh) I like writing Greyhawk stuff.

Wolfgang Baur wrote a fair amount of 'hawk in Dragon, some of it super primo grade.

Rob Kuntz (Robilar) also wrote the Maure Castle stuff in Dragon, I think, or was part of the writing team.

Roger Moore -- the Erik Mona of the 1998 revivification, if you will -- gave up on writing gaming materials at all, I read in some sad thread. He was a nice guy, and a good author. He wanted to you to have this setting when you were old enough, but your Uncle Hasbro wouldn't allow it. :\
