What Will Happen to Greyhawk?

Not sure how that is relevant.
Here's how it is relevant (and FWIW, I agree with Monte's assessment):

If the magazines were doing poorly, WotC wouldn't care if Paizo put out others. No, it's just the opposite. They're doing well, and likely WotC products--probably specifically adventures--aren't doing as well as WotC wants. There's been some loud voices at WotC crying that Dragon and Dungeon (particularly Dungeon) are too good a value. They're too good for the customer, and smart customers buy them rather than regular products. This was true when WotC put out the magazines, and it's been true under the Paizo banner as well. I'm guessing declining sales gave these voices the evidence they needed to axe the magazines.

I agree with recent sentiments that Greyhawk is not lost. The setting has merely taken on an undead template, complete with phylactery.

It'll be back. Just when you least expect it.

I wish ev eryone would quit telling me(the younger generation) what I dont like. I think the political strife rife within greyhawk and the diversity and conflict of living in that owlrd make greyhawk one of the most "real" settings I could have ever imagined. I didnt get to realize that until getting to play few incredible LG module where it became clear. It also has non-gold and exp reasons to adventure. I like to think of greyhawk as the kind of place where you are the guys simply trying to soften the worlds blow on the common people.

The thing is it was impossible to get that out of the PHB. Once I started reading dungeon(which was two issues before they cancelled go figure) I felt very happy withthe setting knowing nothing about it prior other than I thought ehlonna was cool.

FR just seems a little too out there and FR especially just seems like an unnecessary bastardization of everything which I personally cannot stand.
Eberron is cool but only because it fills an niche not previously represented not other than its quasi-medieval technology it reminds me of industrial revolution era europe which IMO is a fascinating period and a call placeo tbuild a different kind of game.

Greyhawk is still always what I will think when I think dnd and I ma very sad to see it go.OOC: is there anyway to acquire past printings of dungeon or the Greyhawk APS I wanna get my hands on them before they become impossible to find.

Technically, Greyhawk died when Gary left TSR.

Officially, Greyhawk might not see another product for a long, long time - if ever again - but it will never really die as long as there are old grognards around like me to run adventures in it.

Don't forget us young grognards who will pick up the torch in the future! ;)

Frankly, I won't shed a tear once new "official" Greyhawk supplements stop coming out. The less stuff that's released, the less they'll continue to ruin my beloved Grehawk.

I know that Erik is a true fan of the milieu, but he is naturally beholden to the corporate masters, and businessmen make piss-poor hobbyists. Even his kindly influence couldn't halt the decline.

If Greyhawk is ever revived, let it be done by a group of true fans of the setting, who are hobbyists themselves, who won't try to approach it with some agenda of "tearing it all down to start over", as was done with FtA, or to try to change its nature to wring more sheckles out of hapless players on hardcover books that should be released as softcovers for half the cost. Let it be revived by those who understand the unique nature of Greyhawk, and who are willing to embrace that nature. And let it be revived by people who don't feel so personally threatened by Gygax and Kuntz that they are creatively locked out of their own creation.

Let it be revived for the right reasons. By people who genuinely love and believe in the setting, rather than someone looking for a quick buck and who sees Greyhawk as the means to make said buck.

I agree 95% with what you're saying here.

Why only 95 percent?

Simple-I would be overjoyed if the timeline was rewound to 576 CY, and it really was starting all over again. That way, we FtA haters would get what we've been wanting for so long.

Even so, this still means no Sean K. Reynolds writing for the setting.

In the worlds of the great Homer Jay Simpson...

WOO-HOO!

:]

I hate young'uns and their gadgets.

I resent that! Some of us are diehard Greyhawk fans too! I hate the trend towards Epic-levle powergaming, easy-to-make magic items, min/maxing prestige classes and feats, and all the other new trends as much as any of you greybearded old-timers.

And I'm only 25. So there.

:P

I just went up the attic in my mother's house yesterday and found my old (pristine) From The Ashes boxed set from 1992. This updates Greyhawk to 585 ish timeline wise, and is quite dark in character (the world is just recovering from a great war).

I have been reading bits of it, and it really is quite a good supplement. In addition, I almost bought the Expedition book on Friday. I may well do so, and actually run a PBForum Greyhawk game. I must admit, I always was a Forgotten Realms guy, but the Time of Troubles all those years ago sort-of ruined it for me, and I splintered my timeline at that point. I guess the beauty of Greyhawk was that world-changing events were not quite so frequent as the annual FR events.
