Elmer's was for wusses. We ate tacks, nails, and sheet rock for minerals in our diet, and we liked it that way!

check classes...

I am going to do some major house rulings for all classes, along with some specific stuff for clerics and wizards.

I will prob check these classes and their spell lists first...then go back and read the entire book.

I always play the game, as-is, before thinking about making a single change or addition, because playing the game teaches you more about how it actually works than just reading it on a page.

Spend a solid week at home poring over it, the DMG and MM. No, seriously -- I took the week it's released as a vacation week at work.
I hope, for your benefit, it is not delayed....
Edit:
After checking the classes then reading cover to cover PHB-DMG-MM, I agree with Mourn

I see you are a traditional geek, then.
Darn straight -- you ate what the School Lunch Program brought you!

Not sure if I'll dig into one section over another -- I may just do the whole "page 1" thing myself, since it sounds like there's so much changed about this edition. We'll be able to take even less for granted than with 3E to 3.5!

Probably create a few characters first, then read it through.

This is one of the first things, as well.

It's tradition among my older gamers to recreate our first characters in each edition, to see how well the concept translates into each new game. We're all extremely suspicious that our concepts will be even easier to realize in this edition.
