What WOTC book should I buy?

Thanks for responding.

I pretty much disagree with everything you said, but there's no real point in going into this here. I'll let the failure of the predicted moral outrage and book burnings to speak for itself on this one. Sorry you didn't like it sparxmith, but I'm glad the book exists cos it's made my campaign better.

In relation to this thread, I'd advice the original poster to check the book out before he buys, and to beaware that there is a big difference of opinion about it. If you want to ehar about why I like it, then feel free to email of PM me!

I would vote for the monster books, with ToH2 at the top of the list. I have MM2 and FF and like them as well, but ToH2 is freakin' great.

Many thanks to everyone for your answers.

To answer the DM/player question... I'm both and neither. I'm more of a dabbler than anything else. I read the books, I write adventures, am building a world, and I play some, too (solo).

More than anything else I read and daydream. I treat D&D as open ended fiction novels that I get to participate in. Most of my involvement is cerebral rather than participatory. I'm a bit of a recluse so I've never joined an ongoing group (even though a friend at work plays 2/week).

So, given all your answers... I can't decide.
Eberron's probably a good choice given my emphasis on reading.
Unearthed Arcana because it gives me options to tinker with and ponder using.
Monster books I like, too, though, again because I can think up mini-stories and adventures for each one.

Is there anyone else out there that reads D&D more than they play it?
(surely I'm not alone... or am I? :\ )

And by the way, I have all of Monte's PDFs, Magical Society and Ecology, almost all of Cooley's stuff (haven't got Buy the Numbers yet), and I am a HUGE fan of Elements of Magic.

Again, thanks to all of you for your posts.

Of course! I am one of them. It's not by choice however. When we play we rarely play more than once every two weeks, and lately it was once per month, and now it's no more until I run my new Grim Tales campaign (see my review; link in the sig.). There was to be a new campaign where I could at last be a player instead of DM, but the first adventure was so bad (the DM who is a novice don't know the rules and don't care; he prepares absolutely nothing, and isn't good at winding. Horrible :( ) that I won't play it anymore. So, as you can see, I can but read and prepare stuff instead of actually playing. I would like to play once per week with a good DM but that's impossible.
