What Would a 4e Mystara Look Like?

Yeah, I can see that. A more *ahem* primordial setting. Most settings have this hugely long history that trails back for thousands of years. Why not set Mystara as the setting that is just starting out. Everything is new. The Immortals walk the land, setting off all sorts of weirdness. The walls of the world are still very thin and other stuff leaks in all the time. The tieflings could be repurposed as Diaboli quite easily. Dragonborn aren't exactly hard to port into any setting and given the huge number of furries in Mystara, no one will even notice them.

I like this idea.

Mystara does have that ancient history, though. It's just that this is the age when the current civilisation is casting off the fear of the unknown that meant it didn't explore far, and starting to wonder what's actually over the horizon. 'Here there be monsters?' Well, we can kill monsters, and we've proved it. This is the age of Marco Polo, Vasco da Gama, or even Hernando da Cortes, or at least their Mystaran equivalents. Seize your opportunities. Go west, young adventurer! Or South, or North, or East. But, go. YMMV.

And of course, the other place to explore is the Hollow World, where all that ancient history is current history.

Most "gods" in Mystara are identities created by ancient Immortals, and hence it is explicitly an "old" setting, even with forgotten generations of Immortals who barely intersect mortal existence any more.

I'd make Mystara the hopeful, all-ages setting.

Where daring swashbucklers jump from balloon-ships to battle fell dragons and rescue the princess.

Where samurai cat-people live next door to swashbuckling dog-people with the turtle-people just down the block.

A mix of Meridian, Tellos and Dragon Hunters.

And then I'd make a cartoon out of it.

Man, this thread is reminding me just how much I really liked the Mystara setting.

I think I might go break out my Rules Cyclopedia here in a minute...

Next thing you know, you'll be sitting there with a glass of Mountain Dew in your hand and blubbering about the good old times.

If you consider anything kid-friendly to be "anime".

But the picture above is from the Tellos comic book, created by the late, great Mike Wieringo (who made his name working for a long while on the Flash comic).

Thanks for that Klaus, I actually didn't know what that was from.

But, y'know what? That would make a PERFECT Mystara for my money.
