I would be a Generalist Ranger/Rogue, and Gestalted, if at all possible. I'd be an Elf, if I could pick, but I was born in a world with only one choice...
Stats? Too debatable! What's average? A person of today, or a Medieval farm-hand? What's an Adventurer? Anyone who goes on one (will he or nil he), or a Green Beret, Navy Seal, SAS Team member?
I'd say INT 14 (average, for an Adventurer) is giving me the benefit of the doubt, but by the Standard Deviation table (up-thread a ways), I could claim an 18! (WOO!)
CON's tough to figure. I've lived through a lot of grief, and I'm still sittin' here pushin' air past my lips, so I'd call myself pretty tough to kill. I'm also pretty beat up, because of it. I don't get sick, outside of the physical problems I already have, but they're plenty! So is that high or low CON? I'm gonna go with 13; a bit low, for an Adventurer, but not bad.
STR (and DEX) are wonky. I'd have to break them in two! Back in high school, when I didn't weigh enough to qualify as a 95# weakling, I could bench-press 145, but could move the leg-press pin to the bottom of the stack, and do twenty reps with
one leg, no trouble (trust me, that aint normal). I've never owned a car in my life, and walked four miles/hour (which is a movement rate of 40, in D&D terms). In 1984, I walked what I
thought was 22 miles (the odometer said 16.8 when I checked it, later) in 5 hours, 10 minutes, and thirty-some seconds (which would have been GREAT time for 22 miles, but a bit slow for 17). I've always gone for the biggest packs I could get, for gear-carrying capacity, and it never slowed me down. In hugh school, I carried 40# of books, and probably about as much in college. A lot more, when hiking/camping. Not sure what to make of all that, in D&D terms. I don't see myself with above-average STR (for an Adventurer), but need about a 16 to carry all the gear, since it doesn't slow me down...

I think I just have a special, Non-Barbarian 40' movement rate, and higher-than-normal carrying capacity, without the great STR. If "Average" is Navy Seals, no way I'm a 10, let alone a 16. I doubt I'm a 16 even if "Average" is gamers! I tend to lose at arm-wrestling, unless we go left-handed. Maybe I'm a bit Dwarvish, and don't decrease my movement rate for a Medium Load!
DEX is mainly wonky because hand-eye co-ordination is good, while movement is less so, due to some health problems. I can fire a stun dart out my blowgun, 14+' away, through a 3' doorway, at a running target trying to dodge, and nail him in the... hindquarters (Hi, Granny!), so I'm probably a 14, there, but while I can hustle cross-country, I wobble when I run, so I never do (Bullettes being rare, in these parts)! My Balance & Reflex saves probably suffer a bit, too. Not sure what to call this. I don't fall, unless I slip, and that's rare.
WIS is tough for me, as I see myself as high in all the things it covers, but not above average for an adventurer. a 14 sounds good, to me, but I can't see where I'm lacking in being an 18, from the description. I'm perceptive, incredibly stubborn, crafty... I'm just wise enough to know that I'm not an 18 WIS!
CHA... If I have to take an 8, it would go, here, but I think I'm really a 10. I can pretty much get along with anybody who wants to be gotten along with (but that's not everybody). Some people do seem to take offense at the way I say/do things, though, so maybe I'm less charismatic than I think (or maybe that's where I lost the WIS)!
If I have to be Human, I have to decrease all those physical stats, due to age, I think.

If I get to switch to Elf, I can raise the DEX at the cost of CON, and suffer not, from age. Now if I can find a good Cleric, and convince him to
Heal/Regenerate me, I wouldn't get stuck with a 7-9 DEX, for movement, and wouldn't suffer Circumstance Penalties on my "To-Hit" rolls.
PS: If I was Human, I'd stop taking Rogue, at some point after 10th level, unless Gestalted. If an Elf, I'd throw in a level of Wizard, at some point, just for all of the magic items that that would let me use!

In any case, Ranger is what I would be, with enough Rogue to get Improved Uncanny Dodge & Trapfinding.
