I voted other too. I want more technology. More stuff like the Sheen. More eldrich horror like Dark Space or Cthulhu, the Alieniest from Tome and Blood, ec...

I want more flying ships like the Weatherlight. More epic campaign setting. Something where the players don't start off 1st level by default.

Well, my submission will have most of that. So I hope you get your wish! ( I doubt it, though).

Also, talking penguins who ride flying walruses*.

* Not really. That's just to throw people off from taking the idea. It's only got 2 of them in it

I will likely be submitting multiple entries because I have three (!) settings ready to be developed, with more on the way...sadly, few d20 companies have expressed interest in new settings, and I'm not in a position to start my own.

I might post my proposals a few days after I mail them, but suffice to say I think each of my ideas will satisfy some of the desires expressed here. :)

(Edit: No, never mind about the posting for now - someone in one of the other threads had a good point; such behavior might compromise the integrity of the blind judging. Mind, I don't think any of the judges would know who I am, or care, but it's probably best if everyone avoids posting their setting ideas. Also, in light of AV's explanation to the effect that WotC is looking primarily for medieval fantasy, one of my ideas is officially out of the running again. Damn, and it was a really cool concept too - steampunk alternate Earth where Rome never existed. Think about it for a moment; the mind boggles.)

Incidentally, the agreement for the initial submissions does not (according to my reading) grant WotC any rights over said submissions - that comes later. Possibly much later; I don't think the ten semi-finalists will have to give WotC the rights to their settings either. So the authors of the proposed settings that don't make it will probably be able to publish elsewhere...unless, of course, they're in the final three.

I voted other. I wouldn't care one whit if the book had absolutely no new rules, classes, races, monsters, magic items, or alternate magic systems. I want cool setting material. Kingdoms at war (or about to be). High politics, intrigue, a vast unexplored wilderness, Detailed cities, Interesting people to interact with.
You should buy Kalamar. :D

I voted less magic. But in truth I'd like to vote for all of the last 4 options (including other).

Most of what I'd want I've got in Kalamar, but for another setting those three would be my choices and as the fourth 'other' I'd say 'Consistant, detailed, and accurate where the magic doesn't make it otherwise'.

"I think "because it's magic" is a cop-out for weak writing and lets you fall back on a weak foundation."
---D. Kenzer, Kalamar Design Team

That for me is a critical statement.

What I would like to see is a better balance world myth, not some happy meal middle ages setting. Something built from the beginning to the period of play that explains why, what, and how things are the way they are in the game.

It really should be a multiple-choice poll. I voted "less magic", but would also have picked "more wilderness", "new classes" (actually I would prefer "different" to "new"), "the gods shall not walk the earth" and "other." I would have hovered over "new magic system", but would have left it alone in the end.

My favourite setting is probably the old warhammer fantasy role play setting - the setting was the strongest thing about the game. Dark, political, lots of hooks for adventures, genuinely scarey at times, but also written with humor. And for a medivel Euopean setting it got away from Tolkien more than most and while Tolkien is great, his style of fantasy has been done to death.

I refuse to vote on the grounds that WotC is making a mistake and I already HAVE a few settings I like. :)

I have to admit, Nightfall, that I almost put a choice on the poll "I don't want another setting" but I figured too many people would answer that, and I was interested in "if we get a new setting, then..."

Can you make these polls multiple choice? I would have had I known.

Wide open spaces... one of the reasons I like Scarred Lands is that it has more open wilderness to explore. It sure seems there is a call for that... take note, potential contest winners!

Races... I am surprised more people haven't called for some change in the races. Personally, I would think it might be fun to have a setting in which certain traditional races are around but not for PCs. For example, a Tolkienesque group of elves, ancient and powerful. But I think this might turn a lot of people off, so it wouldn't be such a great business decision.

Hmm... I am looking for a more light world myself having gamed HârnWorld for the past 13 years exclusively. I just bought several stuff for Kalamar, which I know claim to be different than GH and FR, but honestly compared to Hârn it is GH and FR. Which, IMO, is neither bad or tasteless. I like both kinds because you can vary your style more that way. :)

Hand, you should try at least to have a look at the various Hârn sites out there. The world makes sense, has everything or most explained, and yet manages to add so many hooks that it is almost uncanny. Some will say it is boring, and they may be right, not all like the gray feel of Hârn. Try Swords & Shields, HarnLink, CGI, and Shadow of Bukrai. You might like what you see...
