whatever happened to D20/OGL Earthdawn?

I admit that in my less mature gaming days, any game that came along with a fantasy concept, I usually dismissed it out of hand as a D&D ripoff. Ah, the regrets of a reformed fanboy Sounds like I missed out on an interesting system.

Don't give me flashbacks!

For three years I was stuck in Nowheresville and the local rpg community was embarrassing. I brought my big box of games to show them there was something in life other than Magic and AD&D. They dismissed everything out of hand, including Earthdawn. By the time I left, this "new" game caught on somehow it was called ... Earthdawn. I showed the group my own book.

"How come you never told us about this game! It rocks!"

"I did, you said it was a D&D rip off without even cracking the cover."

Thank God, I left town.

As for a Battletech clarification, Fan Pro also prints up new "classic" Battle Tech stuff and someone else does figures as well. So old "FASA" style Battletech is alive and kicking while Wizkids brought their own cute game as well. So feel free to choose your flavor and have fun.

My excuse for fanboyism is because I was a early teen in a small town with a negligible gaming population. I had no local game store -- the closest thing was over an hour's drive away -- just a subscription to Dragon Magazine and the AD&D stuff I bought mostly from Waldenbooks and the Mail Order Hobby Shop. Is it any wonder I was a TSR/D&D fanboy until I grew up and moved to a real city and met real gamers? Now I recognize that there's no excuse for summarily dismissing a game sight unseen, based on the fact that the general theme overlaps that of a more established system.
