What's best to multiclass with a Knight or Beguiler?

When I first saw the beguiler class I thought it could make a great "fake-rouge" or "hidden-caster". If you took the first level in rouge (for the skill points) and put a lot of ranks in disable device and search and then beguiler from then on, you would be the inconspicous rougish looking guy up until the sticky social situation which is miraculously (silent, still spell) bypassed. And the best part is, you could probably fool the party you were with for a while too!

That would be one heck of an interesting character.
Thanks. Seemed like a bizarre mix to me as well, but there is little overlap (or loss of abilities) for this combo, and therefore makes a quite good option. Stats may need to be decent for the combo to do welll by some people, but I don't worry much about stats being optimal myself.

For another Beguiler option, mixing the class with a Charisma focused divine caster like the Favored Soul would be powerful character that also sets up nicely for Mystic Theurge. Any other CHA based casting class would work as well.

Going the non-caster route, the rogue combo is ideal and it allows the roguish character to keep the most important skills maxed easily. But then again, the class is already essentially designed as the 'magical rogue' (contrary to the fighting rogue standard), so I don't see fighting classes as very good choices for the Beguiler.

Going outside the mainstream, there are Oriental Adventures classes that could mix well. I forget the name, but there is an Aristocrat type OA class that would probably work extremely well, in addition to the ninja/yakuza type classes or asian divine casters.

One thing I'm notcing particularly with the PHB2 classes, the choice to multiclass is very difficult. Abilities are so spread out that switching between classes can really delay useful class abilities. Even with the PHB classes, the decision is a little harder; it was almost expected to multi- or prestige out of Fighter, but now with Weapon Mastery feats, a solo Fighter is much more enticing. Spellcasters have always had this problem, but the Knight has his higher Knight Challenges pushed back, along with Armor use and other abilities.

That said, I'm fond of the idea of a Paladin/Knight- both are heavy armor users, and both can benefit from high charisma. Fighter/Knight is another idea- the extra feats make it easier for the Knight to pick up Shield Specialization and Shield Ward, and still be effective in attacking. I'm running Age of Worms as a Gestalt game, and a Cleric/Knight of Hextor was very effective, but as a multiclass combo you end up losing out on a full Knight's HP and BAB, and a full Cleric's spells. Another combo that just occured to me (because I glanced at someone's suggestion of a Marshall/Knight), Dragon Shaman/Knight: the Knight's martial weapons, heavy armor, BAB and HP, the Dragon Shaman's auras and breaths.

Don't most of those have abilities that don't function properly with heavy armor? It seems a shame to waste heavy armor profiency.

Naw, psionics classes can all function in heavy armor, they're just not immediately proficient..therein lies the unbalance of psionics and divine magics :) The Knight Wilder sounds alright, but not as 'lawful' as one would think.

Psionic knights could pretty much be the overpower of the century as can be any class that can buff themselves and still fight like crazy.

In the trade, that is what we call a "good thing".

That being said however, I have a Beguiler 6/Mindbender 1/Shadowcraft Mage 5 I'm dying to play.

Ooooh. Knight/Marshal would be pants.

I thought a swashbuckler/beguiler would be neat also: lots of social skills, some trapfinding and useful skills, and int double-lifting for damage! All style, all style.

Oh, sure, it's a good thing. Just pointing out that multiclassing isn't always the best choice... mostly because I like hearing myself talk sometimes.

Running AoW, I'm becoming quite fond of the possibilities Gestalt allows- multiclassing without the drawback of deciding which class your advancing in.
