What's familiar about this?

Prof Yeti

First Post
This probably has come up before but I haven't found it yet (or I just plain missed it :o ). But can Magebred animals be used as familiars? I had thought I had seen somewhere were in was a no, but now I can't find anything on the subject.

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks.

No, generally speaking, they can't.

At least, they can't without the wizard takes an Improved Familiar feat. :)

And they can absolutely not be taken as animal companions.

Do you know where it says that? I don't doubt that it does but I would like to mark my book for future reference.

Well that would at least be cool. (Good thing my current character has the feat. :heh: )

Yeah I saw that, cool.

It's not where it says it, but where it doesn't say it.

The book provides a list of animals who are suitable as familiars. Magebred animals are not on that list. Anything not on that list is only available through the Improved Familiar feat, and generally only when it is specifically called out as available.

The Magebred template does not call that out.

You wanted where the info could be found...

From the SRD
FAMILIARS
A familiar is a normal animal that gains new powers and becomes a magical beast when summoned to service by a sorcerer or wizard. It retains the appearance, Hit Dice, base attack bonus, base save bonuses, skills, and feats of the normal animal it once was, but it is treated as a magical beast instead of an animal for the purpose of any effect that depends on its type. Only a normal, unmodified animal may become a familiar. An animal companion cannot also function as a familiar.

The part I bolded seems to indicate that the animal used cannot be modified by a template (like magebread), so you couldn't have one as a normal familiar.

Also from the SRD
The [list of creatures] presents only a few possible improved familiars. Almost any creature of the same general size and power as those on the list makes a suitable familiar.

Which seems to imply that as long as the new magebread animal is similar in power to one of the sample Improved Familiars it's okay to have it (if you take the feat).

I knew I had found a "reason" why I could do that before. (And why I had the SRD bookmarked on by computer. :o )

Yeah got the Improved Familiar feat. Now just trying to find a good guardian familiar like the ones in Complete Warrior. :\

But thanks! :)
