What's new with the GSL?

Which significant 3PP has hitched their wagon to Pathfinder, aside from Paizo, who would have done so anyway, crappy GSL or not?

Game's not final yet and there's no 3PP license (although it's obviously OGL). I think that Adamant and Necromancer, at least, have expressed interest in Pathfinder support and Green Ronin may have alluded to it (although I could be inventing that in my memory).

If not for the GSL delay, there could well be no Pathfinder at all...

We been over that quite a few times. I have no doubt in my mind that it is not the case. Paizo saw the chance to do what no one had been able to do before. Staying with the previous edition, catering to those who chose not to "upgrade". Because some always choose to stick to the old edition. It's good business.

As for the other companies, I have seen Clark mention something about a Pathfinder ToH, because that one can't be made under the current GSL. AFAIK, Last we heard from Clark, he was still for going 4e, if the GSL was done right, not for Pathfinder.

As for Adamant, all respect to them, but I would hardly count them as a significant 3PP company. But I could be wrong, of course. As for Green Ronin, I haven't heard anything, but then again, I do not follow them closely since they do not make stuff for my game anymore.

Then again, if anyone has any link citing a commitment to Pathfinder, I would be most interested in reading about it.

Cheers

They recently announced "3rd Era" as a brand for their d20/OGL library, and they are releasing their A Song of Fire and Ice next year, so I doubt that there's Pathfinder support from them planned.

Not quite... Even without the GSL delay, I strongly suspect that there would have been a Pathfinder. It might have been less popular or less successful (or more; who can say?), but 3.5 remains the system that Paizo prefers, GSL or not.

Note: That doesn't translate into "Paizo hates 4th edition." My favorite RPG isn't even D&D at all, it's Call of Cthulhu, but Paizo doesn't publish CoC stuff either. Just because we don't publish adventures for that system doesn't mean we hate it. Same goes for 4th Edition.

But the GSL was not the fulcrum on which we were waiting to make the decision on what system to publish under last year. The fact that we were among the last people to actually see the rules (we didn't see them until well after we had to decide if we were going to use them at all, due to the realities of our publishing schedule) is a huge reason we went with Pathfinder.

Do you think that the delay in getting you the rules was intentional on WOTC's part, James? A way to get 3pp's on committed and on board? Or just a SNAFU of bad timing?

I honestly have no idea. I have my theories, of course, but the simplest explanation is probably the right one: they bit off more than they could chew. Paizo does this a lot, too, of course! :) It's part of what makes working in the RPG industry a non-stop thrill ride!

It only goes to show that WotC's Legal is not happy with GSL or any license to open up their propietary brands to third parties.

If you drop me a line, there's something I'd like to send you.
