What's the ECL for Chosen of Mystra?

Alternatively, you could just figure out all the abilities as magical items and have them start with less money.

I'm pretty sure the CR adjustment is less than +10. The errata reduces E's CR from 45 to 39.

Any chance I could get on of the Great Rulesmasters (read: Caliban or Crothian :D) to comment?

DC

In the FRCS book, Elminsters has 35 levels and is CR 45

The FRCS errata lowers Elminsters CR to 39.

Thus, the Chosen of Mystra template adds +4 CR.

I don't know if you would count it as +4 ECL or not.

CR is not the same thing as ECL. CR just measures how hard you are to face in combat, ECL also includes non-combat advantages, so it may be higher than the CR adjustment.

With the powers they get, I would make a guess that their ECL would be +4, the roleplaying benefits/penalties not included and should not count in the first place IMO. The power itself is about equivilant of 4 levels, 6 levels is way too much, and certainly not 10-that's a definate difference in abilities/feats gained.

Especially since this is a high-powered campaign, I don't think getting the ECL off by 1 or 2 would hurt much.

Re

I play a Chosen of Mystra in a FR campaign. They are +4 ECL. The ECL is listed at the bottom of the page that Mystra is on.

They gain the following: +10 enchancement bonus to Constitution, Silver Fire: 2nd Version detailed in FRCS, Immune to aging, disease and disintegration, Gain 1 spell slot of each spell level, Immune to one spell of each level as if permanent Spell Immunity spell were cast on individual.

They are very powerful, but CR+4 or +5 is about right.

Now, I don't do things game balance wise. I still advise the following:

I would only allow this kind of character to be played by a good roleplayer who knew the Realms. Part of the restriction of playing a Chosen is not listed in the rules.

The restriction is summed up as follows:

You are a servant of Mystra, chosen to protect, promote and enhance the Art in the Realms. You throw down evil wizards, and you don't use magic to dominate or do evil in the world, though you may not be good.

You should always be wary of using your power or throwing your weight around. You have been entrusted by a goddess with greater power than others, do not abuse that trust.

I would never let a power gamer play a Chosen of Mystra in one of my campaigns. I would never let a player play a Chosen of Mystra without a well-thought out background that gives me a reason why Mystra chose to gift them with such power.

When they are playing the character, I would expect them to follow Mystra's dogma and to play their character in an introspective manner when wielding their magical power.

These are the caveats I recommend when allowing a player to play a Chosen of Mystra.

I don't allow non-arcane casters to play Chosen, and I don't recommend that others do either.

Err, unless I'm totally mistaken, that is the CR adjustment, not the level adjustment. Those are usually different.

Just to toss in an additional number, using Soldarin's ECL calculator, I arrived at a +6 level adjustment.

As mentioned earlier, the +4 is a CR adjustment, not an ECL adjustment.

To be honest, I'm relatively unimpressed by the Chosen of Mystra abilities, and would go with ECL +5 or +6. IMHO, the really useful ability is the immunity to one spell of each level, which is pretty monstrous if chosen correctly. The +10 Con is an enhancement bonus, which means that paying ECL for it sucks for an epic-level character, who can buy a Con-enhancing item or cast an empowered endurance spell instead.
